Because of the lack of a sleeve, and prolonged use resulting in a not-so flush retraction of the bite valve, (to say nothing of the slightly lint-attracted rubbery material or the tendency to become bacteria's beautiful opaque home), after some point in life it becomes necessary to replace your bite valve. If you've had your Groove for more than a few months and realized how amazing it is, I highly recommend getting a spare set of bite valves, especially for the more outdoors-prone individuals.
Here are a few situations you may find yourself in:
-You've forgotten to wash your bite valve for the last 2-3 weeks. A thin film of gross is developing inside your bite valve. You need to clean it out, toss it in the dish washer, but need the bottle today. Easy! Pop it off, give the top a rinse and stick a replacement on while you get the dirty one cleaned.
-Out hiking when your bottle flips out of your backpack and lands in some dirt. Rinse off the bottle, and replace the cap, which is now covered in mud.
-You've had your Groove for nearly a year. ...it's time to replace that valve regardless, buddy.
At the price of these valves, and that they're a two-pack makes this a no brainer purchase for the Groove enthusiast. Bacteria LOVE these POC's (point of contacts) and will grow resistant with each cleaning. For sanitary's sake, replace your valve each year (I do 6 months, or after unfortunate incidents), or shorter depending on how thorough/often you clean the valve.
I recommend washing at least once a week in the dish washer. Every month take it out and actually swab it out with a Q-tip.
If it begins to turn yellow from bacteria, you've done something terribly, terribly wrong. :)

I purchased the extra bites valves not too long after I purchased my CamelBak Groove so I would have them on hand. I love all of my CamelBak products and highly recommend these if you have the CamelBak Groove bottle.

It's great to have a back-up. The original bite valve was getting grubby, and having a backup meant I could put it in the dishwasher and sterilize it. Strongly recommend!
